The girl student, who set herself ablaze outside Fakir Mohan Autonomous College principal’s chamber in Odisha’s Balasore, is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Updating about the health condition of the patient, the Burn Unit departmental head of the hospital, Dr Sanjay Giri, stated that her condition is still critical despite best efforts by the team of doctors.
"We were fully ready to provide all kinds of necessary treatment to the patient as soon as she was shifted to AIIMS. We checked the fluid, blood pressure and heartbeat of the patient. After making the patient stable by providing her with the necessary fluids and antibiotics, she was immediately shifted to the burn centre. An eight-member medical panel comprising specialists from critical care, nephrology, surgery, pulmonology, and anaesthesia has been formed at AIIMS for round-the-clock monitoring. Accordingly, decisions are being taken to provide the necessary treatment to the patient," said Dr Giri.
"After providing the necessary fluid to the patient, the dressing was properly made as it is a very important part of the treatment. We have made a very high-quality dressing. The patient has suffered approximately 90-95 per cent burn injuries. Her respiratory system has been affected due to inhalational burn. As she is finding it difficult in the respiration process, she has been kept on a life support ventilator,” he said.

Further sharing details of her health condition, Dr Giri said, “Her lungs and her kidneys have been affected. We are checking her kidney function. If required, dialysis will be conducted from today and the panel will decide about it. Dehydration occurs when the outside skin is burned, and it starts affecting all the internal organs. The patient's blood pressure is low and we are giving her medicines to increase it. The team is trying its best. However, the patient's condition is critical."
"We are trying to stabilise the patient first so that proper treatment for her burn injuries can be started. It is difficult to say anything about the survival chances of the patient. However, we are giving our best efforts. Our Director himself is monitoring the treatment. Even the president of our institute came from Delhi to take stock of the situation. We are providing the best possible treatment to the patient," he added.
