Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, on Tuesday, embarked on a visit to the flood-affected areas of Jajpur district, where a breach in the Kani river embankment has left nearly 40 villages submerged.

As of the latest reports, the breach has hit at least 15 panchayats so far, with officials warning that the number could rise to 19 if water levels continue to spread.

Minister To Review Situation On Ground

The minister said he will inspect the affected areas along with senior officials from the Water Resources and Disaster Management departments. “As soon as the floodwaters recede, repair work on the breach will begin. We will ensure that normalcy is restored at the earliest,” Pujari said.

He added that once water level recedes, a damage assessment of crops and livestock will be undertaken, and compensation will be distributed to affected families.

Thousands Displaced In Jajpur

In villages such as Ahiyaas and Kasapa, nearly 5,000 residents have been rendered homeless. Displaced families are being sheltered in nearby school buildings and designated camps, where cooked food and relief materials are being provided.

Sources reported that farmlands, houses, and livestock have been badly affected, with residents struggling to salvage their belongings.

ODRAF, Fire Services Deployed

To bolster rescue and relief operations, three ODRAF teams and two Fire Services units have been deployed across the worst-hit pockets. The administration said relief measures were being carried out on a war footing while the situation was being monitored closely.

Apart from Jajpur, the Revenue Minister said floodwaters have largely receded in other districts and the situation is ‘returning to normalcy’. In Jajpur, however, the heavy water flow has delayed immediate repairs of the embankment, raising concerns about the safety of adjoining stretches.

"I am embarking on a field visit along with officials from the water resources and disaster management department. We will ensure that the breach is repaired and normalcy is restored. As soon as the floodwaters recede, a disinfection drive will begin,” said Minister Suresh Pujari.
