In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, a 55-year-old auto-rickshaw driver allegedly bludgeoned his elderly parents to death with a hammer and spent the entire night beside their blood-soaked bodies. The incident took place on Tuesday night in Dhonapal village, under Baisinga police limits.
The victims have been identified as Hadibandhu Sahu (81) and his wife Shanti Sahu (72). Their son, Himanshu, was found sitting on a cot near the lifeless bodies on Wednesday morning by locals, who immediately alerted the police.
Police rushed to the spot and arrested Himanshu. The bodies were then sent to the PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada for post-mortem examinations.
According to preliminary investigation, a quarrel broke out on Tuesday night, after which Himanshu, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, killed both his parents using a hammer typically used for breaking stones. The murder weapon was reportedly recovered from the scene.
A senior police officer stated that Himanshu’s wife and children had been living separately for an extended period due to ongoing family disputes. This isolation may have exacerbated tensions within the household.
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
The gruesome crime has left the local community stunned, with many expressing disbelief over the brutal nature of the murders and the fact that the accused spent hours beside the corpses without raising any alarm.
