In the midst of intense discussions at the 2025 G7 Summit, held from June 15 to 17 in the picturesque town of Kananaskis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a breathtaking Silver Filigree Clutch Purse to Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, infusing the high-profile event with a touch of Indian heritage.

This act of diplomacy unfolded against a complicated backdrop of recent Indian-Canada tensions, and the gift served as a bridge, blending cultural exchange with international relations.

The Timeless Craft of Tarakasi

The clutch hails from Cuttack, renowned as the ‘Silver City of India,’ where the ancient art of Tarakasi has thrived for over 500 years. This exquisite craft involves skilled artisans meticulously twisting and shaping 99% pure silver wires into delicate, lace-like patterns.

Influenced by Mughal architecture and the sanctity of temple art, Tarakasi flourished under the patronage of local rulers and later gained momentum with British support.

In 2012, it earned a prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its unique contribution to India’s cultural tapestry. According to a 2021 study in the Journal of Cultural Heritage, each piece demands the collaborative effort of 10 to 15 artisans, a process that can span several days and supports over 1,500 livelihoods in the region.

A Legacy Preserved Through Dedication

Despite the rise of mass-produced alternatives, the dedication of these artisans keeps this tradition alive, breathing life into every intricate pattern.

For the people of Cuttack, seeing their craft showcased on the global stage during the G7 Summit is proof that their heritage continues to captivate and connect cultures across the world.
