The daughter of Aul’s former MLA Debendra Sharma, who also unsuccessfully contested on a Congress ticket from her father’s constituency in the 2024 general elections, has filed a police complaint against six persons of her in-law’s family including her husband, accusing them of inflicting physical and mental torture on her for dowry.
Registering a case against six persons, her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle (husband of her father-in-law’s sister) and aunt (her uncle’s wife), Aul Police has launched a probe.

As per the complaint, Debasmita Sharma married Dr Rahul Pratap Ray, elder son of Amarendra Prasad Ray of Buxi Bazar Patin Sahi in Cuttack, following vedic rituals on December 14, 2022.
Just 20 or 25 days after the marriage, her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle (husband of her father-in-law’s sister) and aunt (her uncle’s wife) allegedly started torturing her, asking her to bring Rs 50 lakh more from her house.
When she realised she was not able to bear the torture anymore and her life was in danger, she lodged a complaint at Aul Police Station, the complaint mentioned.
