A businessman in Odisha's Bolangir district allegedly faked his own kidnap to evade lenders to whom he owes around Rs 80 lakh.
The matter came to the fore after the accused, Sunil Agarwal, was arrested by the Bargarh police from Raipur in Chhattisgarh on Friday.
As per reports, Agarwal, from Bangomunda in in Bolangir had procured rice from many rice mill owners in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Boudh districts on credit. However, he failed to pay up the millers after losing Rs 80 lakh to betting.
Many millers have also registered complaints of cheating against Agarwal at different police stations.
Fearing arrest, Agarwal plotted his own kidnap. His wife, Jyotsna filed a complaint at Bargarh Town Police Station alleging Agarwal had been kidnapped by some miscreants. She had even named some suspects to the police.
However, when the police launched the investigation, it was learnt that there were many cheating cases pending against Agarwal in several police stations. And the case was solved after his arrest from Raipur.
Agarwal’s brother-in-law, Narendra Agarwal was also arrested by the police in the same case.
“It was a sensitive case, so we were pursuing it diligently. His wife had also complained that Agarwal was kidnapped. We had formed three teams to search for Agarwal. I am happy that he has been found and the case has been cracked,” said Bargarh Additional SP Tapan Kumar Mohanty.
