There is no justification for having Orissa High Court bench in any part of Odisha, informed Chief Minister Mohan Majhi in Assembly on Monday.

The Chief Minister made such remarks while responding to a question raised by MLA Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo. In his question, the BJD MLA wanted to know whether the Odisha government had any proposals to set up a circuit bench of the Orissa High Court in Bolangir.

While replying to the question by the MLA, the Chief Minister said, “As per the Supreme Court verdict, there is no justification in having a bench of Orissa High Court in any part of the state.”

It is pertinent to mention here that there were series of protests demanding a permanent bench of the Orissa High Court in Western Odisha. Several social organisations and political parties had also launched agitations over the establishment of the High Court bench owing to the problems faced by the people of their respective regions.

Ashok Das, convener of Kendriya Kriyanusthan Committee said, “It seems that the CM has not properly gone through the Supreme Court ruling. The Apex Court has never ruled out justification regarding the High Court bench in Western Odisha.”

According to Das, it was not a conclusive denial and how far the issue of virtual court is totally different. “Supreme Court has never denied our demand. We have already kept our demand before the Apex Court,” Das added.
