No footwear or fire! These Odisha villagers regress to primitive ways every 10 years

Kutling village under Udala block in Mayurbhanj district becomes a focal point every ten years during a traditional ceremony known as the 'Dashandi Puja'. 

For two days, everyday life is reportedly brought to a standstill as the villagers adhere to age-old customs aimed at safeguarding their community.

Rituals and Restrictions

During the observance of the 'Dashandi Puja', villagers abide by distinct practices such as refraining from wearing footwear, lighting fires in homes, and restricting movement in and out of the village. Bamboo barricades are set up to enforce these rules, ensuring that the ritual remains undisturbed by external influences. 

As per reports, the village Goddess is worshipped with specific rituals and utmost dedication as part of the 'Dashandi Puja'.

Faith and Scepticism

The ritual, believed to protect against diseases, animal attacks, and other perils, involves not only Kutling but 13 other neighbouring villages. It is worth noting that while the ritual is a collective effort, women are not permitted to enter the sacred site where the Puja is performed. This aspect of the ceremony has sparked discussions on gender inclusion within cultural practices.

"Our villagers have been continuing this tradition for a very long time. As per the popular belief, our village remains protected by following these age-old traditions," said Sanatan Mallick, a villager.

"By performing the specific rituals, we remain protected against diseases, animal attacks, and other perils," said Laxmidhar Khatei," another villager.

Despite the continuity of this practice, some modern rationalists question its relevance, pointing to the tension between deep-rooted traditions and contemporary beliefs.

"It's not possible that by performing certain rituals, the villagers will be protected from diseases, animal attack and other perils," said rationalist Debendra Sutar.

Overall, the' Dashandi Puja' stands as a testament to the enduring nature of local traditions, even as they face scrutiny from newer generations.
