The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team probing the death of Nepalese student Prakriti Lamsal at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar visited the KISS (Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences) premises as part of a broader investigation into various allegations.
Background of the KISS probe angle:
During its initiation of a probe on Thursday, the NHRC had requested the institution’s students as well as the general public to come forward with any information that they may have to aid in the investigation.
Subsequently, an RTI activist had brought forth allegations including the poor welfare of students at KISS, land encroachment by the institution, and the possible influence of the power of KISS and KIIT University founder Achyuta Samanta, who was also an MP from Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Taking possible note of it, the NHRC team visited the KISS campus today and took stock of the situation. While it did not detail the exact nature and angles probed, sources state that the committee’s members carried out interrogations in the angles highlighted by the RTI activist.

NHRC probe into KIIT concludes:
Following their visit to KISS, the NHRC team headed to the Biju Patnaik International Airport, wrapping up three consecutive days of thorough investigation, which they stated provided them with valuable inputs.
“We recorded statements of multiple people at KIIT University as per the orders of the NHRC. We have interrogated as many people as we deemed fit for the case. Today marked the third and final day of our probe and details of it will be released by the Council,” said NHRC Law Registrar Joginder Singh.

Singh, however, did not divulge any details regarding an interrogation involving Achyuta Samanta. For three consecutive days, the NHRC’s independent team conducted an on-site investigation into the incident, recording statements from KIIT authorities and students.
