A newlywed woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws' residence in Kalarapadara village under Patapur police limits of Ganjam district on Sunday. Family members of the deceased alleged that she was murdered over dowry.
The deceased has been identified as Pushpa Sahu, wife of Rajendra Swain, a resident of the same village.
According to reports, Pushpa, daughter of Gangadhar Sahu from Chikili village under Sheragada police limits had married Rajendra about ten months ago during which the bride's family had reportedly fulfilled all dowry demands.
A few months later, the in-laws allegedly demanded an additional Rs 20,000 as dowry. After the bride’s family expressed their inability to fulfill this demand, Pushpa’s in-laws reportedly began harassing her.
Family members of the deceased woman alleged that on Saturday night Pushpa was killed by her in-laws following which her father, Gangadhar Sahu, filed a police complaint at the Patapur police station this morning.

The police reached the scene and began their investigation. While the body has been seized, authorities did not offer any additional comments and stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received.
Meanwhile, the woman’s in-laws refuted the allegations and claimed that Pushpa took her own life.

A similar incident was reported from Beheraguda village under Semiliguda police station of Koraput district on January 4 where a pregnant woman was found dead at her in-laws. Her family members had filed a police complaint alleging that her in-laws had killed her after they could not fulfill their dowry demand of Rs 5 lakhs.
