This Durga Puja, the festive market is all set to get a major boost with the central government’s announcement of a 10% GST rebate on electronic goods. The decision is expected to not only increase sales but also bring cheer to thousands of middle-class families looking forward to shopping during the festive season.
From TVs, refrigerators, and air-conditioners to mobile phones, a wide range of items will now be cheaper, encouraging customers to plan purchases ahead of Puja. Traders and companies have also lined up attractive exchange deals, gifts, and festive offers, making this season a double bonanza for buyers.

According to the new guidelines, which will come into effect from September 22, buyers of electronic items will save significantly. Air-conditioners will carry a rebate ranging from Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,000, while LED televisions between 32 to 66 inches may see discounts of up to Rs 10,000.
Both traders and customers are optimistic. While customers see it as a golden chance to upgrade to new gadgets, traders expect sales volumes to double compared to previous years.
“I was here to buy a new TV. We are now comparing the prices of items before and after the rebate, so that we can buy it after September 22 after the reform is in effect. All the middle and poor class families across the country will definitely benefit from this rebate,” Upendra Rath, a customer said.
“AC was too expensive for common man. It has become common now. Now, there will be 10% rebate on ACs. Moreover, 28% items have been deducted to 18%. So, electronics will be cheaper now. We should be thankful to the Central government,” stated trader Pramananda Mahapatra.
Market experts believe that even those who earlier hesitated to spend will now step forward to buy. Though the government may incur some loss in GST revenue, it is likely to be offset by higher sales. Overall, the move is being hailed as a major GST reform directly benefitting the middle class and giving a much-needed boost to the market ahead of the festive season.
