Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar recorded the birth of 11 more yellow anacondas on July 4, strengthening its reptile population and marking another success in its ongoing conservation efforts.

These new hatchlings follow the earlier birth of seven baby anacondas on June 29, bringing the total number of yellow anacondas in the zoo to 25. Zoo officials have examined the mother anaconda and confirmed that she is in stable health.

The anacondas were born to a breeding pair originally brought in from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in Chennai in October 2019.

Population Now at 25

With the arrival of the newborns, the zoo now houses two adult males, two adult females, and 21 juveniles, according to the zoo’s deputy director Sanath Kumar.

Immediately after their birth, the baby anacondas were placed under quarantine to ensure proper monitoring and care during their early development stages. Once they are strong enough to feed on their own, they will be moved back into the main exhibit enclosure.

Anaconda Enclosure to Be Upgraded

Plans are in motion to revamp the anaconda enclosure to accommodate the growing population. While wild yellow anacondas can grow up to 14 feet in length, those in captivity typically reach around 10 feet.

Native to South American countries such as Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil, yellow anacondas thrive in humid environments. Zoo officials have stated that Nandankanan has been replicating such conditions to support their healthy growth and survival in captivity.
