In yet another disturbing incident involving minors in Odisha’s school system, a Class 9 student from a government high school in Koraput district has been found pregnant, marking the third such case involving schoolgirls in less than ten days across the state.
According to reports, the latest case has emerged from Bandhugaon block of Koraput, where a 15-year-old girl, currently enrolled at a government high school, is reportedly in an advanced stage of pregnancy. The minor’s family has alleged that a Class 12 student of a nearby government school is responsible.
After learning of the pregnancy, the girl’s parents allegedly relocated her to a relative’s house, citing fear of social stigma. Sources indicate that the family has so far not approached the police, and no official response has been received from the Bandhugaon police station or school authorities.
Multiple Cases Raise Alarms Across State
This incident follows two separate cases reported just days earlier in Kandhamal and Mayurbhanj districts, where minor girls were also found to be pregnant after returning from summer vacations.
In the Mayurbhanj case, the girl admitted to having been in a consensual relationship with a minor boy in her village. Her mother later lodged an FIR at the Bangiriposi police station. In Kandhamal, irregularities were spotted when a girl failed to collect sanitary napkins post-vacation. A medical exam confirmed the pregnancy, leading to police reports at Kotagad and Belghar police stations.
As of Monday morning, there has been no official confirmation of whether the alleged accused in the Koraput case has been questioned or a probe has been pursued in this regard.
