A minor girl was allegedly raped by a local man while she was on her way to relieve herself near a river in Khadamaliguda village under Podagada Panchayat in Koraput district. The incident is reported to have occurred on July 25, following which police arrested the accused, identified as Manoj Benya from the neighbouring village of Nuaguda.
According to the victim's family, the girl had stepped out early in the morning to relieve herself near a riverbank. It was then that Benya, a married man, allegedly forcibly dragged her and committed the assault.
The victim disclosed the incident to her father after he returned home later that day. The family then discussed the matter with village elders and formally lodged a police complaint around 8 pm on Saturday, said police sources.
Victim Threatened To Stay Silent
Family members of the victim alleged that the accused had threatened the girl with dire consequences if she spoke about the incident. Fearing for her life, the girl remained silent until her father’s return.
The Koraput Sadar police have registered the case under Sections 125, 64 of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. Upon receiving the complaint, police immediately visited the village, launched an investigation, and arrested the accused late last night.
Medical Examination and Legal Proceedings Underway
As of the last reports, police investigations are ongoing, and officials stated that all legal procedures are being followed to ensure swift justice for the survivor.
The accused will undergo a medical examination today before being produced in court, said the Inspector-in-Charge of Koraput Sadar police station.
Meanwhile, the minor girl is being supported by her family and is currently staying with them at the police station along with local villagers who are assisting her.
