Cuttack witnessed a major fire incident at a suitcase showroom  and garments godown in the bustling Dolamundai area on Tuesday. Thick black smoke was seen billowing out of the showroom, causing panic among locals and passersby. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

As per eye-witnesses, the fire was reported as soon as the shop opened at around 11 am today. The incident occurred when the staff turned on the air-conditioner after opening the shop. It is suspected that some fault in the electric wiring might have triggered a short-circuit leading to the fire inside the showroom.

On getting information, Firefighters rushed to the spot and began efforts to control the blaze. However, the intensity of the fire made the operation challenging. Authorities have not reported any casualties or injuries so far. Nearby shop owners and residents expressed concerns over fire safety measures in the area.

Locals Extend Help

“When the fire broke, panic prevailed in the area. There has been massive damage in the showroom which also has two other major shops. We are thankful that due to coordination of all agencies and local residents, the extent of damage was controlled,” said local resident Ranjan Biswal.

Officials are conducting an investigation to determine the reason behind the fire. More details are awaited as efforts to douse the flames continue.

“The fire has already been controlled. Only after a probe, we can ascertain the exact cause of the fire mishap. The situation is under control. Five fire-fighter teams were pressed into the service after we received an emergency call,” said a firefighter.

“I got a call from staff that the air-conditioner blasted when staff turned it on. Total material inside the shop was around 80 lakh and furniture and other cost would be more,” said owner of the affected showroom.
