Mason falls from roof in Odisha, carried 4 km on cot to access ambulance

In a stark example of rural neglect, an injured mason in Odisha’s Senaghati village had to be carried 4 km on a cot after an ambulance failed to reach his home due to non-motorable roads. The victim, Narayan Dehuri, was later hospitalised in critical condition, sparking anger among locals over repeated administrative inaction on infrastructure development.

In yet another grim reminder of crumbling rural infrastructure, a severely injured mason was carried nearly four kilometres on a cot by villagers on Monday after an ambulance failed to reach his home due to non-motorable roads.

The shocking incident took place in Senaghati village under Garagadbahal panchayat under Redhakhol block in Sambalpur district.

The victim man, identified as Narayan Dehuri, was working on a roof when he suddenly fell, sustaining serious injuries. Villagers immediately called for an ambulance. However, due to poor road conditions, the vehicle could not reach the accident site.

Left with no option, local residents lifted the injured man onto a cot and walked him four kilometres to where the ambulance was parked. From there, he was rushed to Redhakhol hospital and later referred to VIMSAR hospital in Burla due to his critical condition.

This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in the locality. Despite repeated demands, no road is being constructed, leaving villagers furious.

No official response was received from the administration in this regard.

“After joining the bricks of a 2.5-foot wall, I was smearing cement mix on the side of it, when my legs slipped and I fell down. I was carried up to a distance of around four kilometres on a cot and then on an ambulance vehicle to the hospital,” the victim man said.

“There is neither a bridge nor a motorable road,” Narayan Dehuri lamented.

“He was working on the rooftop and accidentally fell down. As there is no motorable road, we carried him on a cot to the hospital for treatment. The patient reached late by nearly an hour,” a resident of Senaghati village, Sushant Dehuri, expressed.
