A man from Odisha reportedly fled without paying a hotel bill amounting to over Rs 2 lakh at the Taj Ganges Hotel in Varanasi. He stayed at the 5-star hotel and fed on luxurious and delicious food for four days before fleeing without paying the dues, police said.

The accused has been identified as Sarthak Sanjay. The matter came to the fore after a complaint was lodged with the Varanasi police in this connection. As per the complaint, the hotel management demanded that Sanjay be arrested and the bills be paid as soon as possible.

As per the manger Rikhi Mukherjee, Sanjay was a guest at the hotel from October 14 to 18 and feasted on the food served at the restaurant, accruing room charges of Rs 1.7 lakh and an additional Rs 36,000 in food expenses, totalling Rs 2,04,521.

The hotel staff discovered Sanjay's abrupt departure after failing to reach him on his mobile phone, which was found to be switched off. Attempts to contact him remained futile, with only some of his belongings left behind in his hotel room. Hotel staff searched his room only to find nothing more than a few clothes.

Following the incident, the hotel management has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with local authorities, who are now probing the case. The hotel manager has shared Sanjay’s full address and mobile numbers as provided to them by the accused.

Investigators are keen to uncover how such a hefty sum went unpaid without immediate detection by the hotel.

“An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is underway based on a complaint by Taj Ganges manager Rikhi Mukherjee. A manhunt has been also launched to trace the accused Sanjay,” a senior police officer of Varanasi police said.
