A youth from Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) was picked up by Mahila Police in Bhubaneswar on Friday, when he was on his way to allegedly kidnap an Odia girl from Jagatsinghpur.

The accused youth has been identified as Sameer Mansoor, who hails from Bihar and is currently stationed in J&K. The victim is a resident of Pathuria village via Rahama under Kujanga police limits of Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.

According to sources, the girl and the youth (belonging to another community) came to know each other through the online gaming app ‘Free Fire’, in 2022. Gradually, they got closer and had a friendly relationship. Hiding his religious affiliation, the youth allegedly started luring the girl. In March 2024, the accused visited Odisha and met her. During their stay in a hotel in Puri, the accused Sameer allegedly established a physical relationship with her.

As per an FIR lodged by the victim, Sameer had even compelled her to convert her religion to marry him. However, after coming to know that he was from another community, she refused the proposal. Irked by this, the youth had started blackmailing her by threatening to publicise some photos and videos of their intimate moments. The accused has already taken around Rs 5 Lakh from the girl’s family by blackmailing her.

Sameer was on his way to meet the girl and forcibly took her along with him to J&K.

“After getting scared, the girl sought help and contacted me. When the victim disagreed to convert, she was blackmailed by the youth. Even to the extent she was earlier threatened with dire consequences,” the victim's female counsel, Sanghamitra Rajguru stated.

“The youth is working in J&K and staying there. Initially, he had told me his short name, hence I thought him to be a Hindu boy. At a later stage, I learned that he was a Muslim. He has been mentally torturing me and my family and I seek justice,” the victim said.

Acting on the FIR, Mahila Police have detained the youth and initiated a probe.
