In a tragic incident, three people, including a woman, were killed after being struck by lightning while working in agricultural fields near Bistunuguda village under Sadar block of Rayagada district on Friday.
Meanwhile, two other persons have been left battling for their lives after they sustained critical injuries in the incident.
According to sources, the victims were engaged in farm work on Friday when sudden thunderstorms struck the region. Without enough time to take shelter, they were hit by lightning on the spot. Locals immediately rushed to help and shifted the injured persons to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Rayagada, where their condition is reported to be serious.

Police personnel from Rayagada Town Police Station soon arrived at the scene, took stock of the situation, and initiated an investigation. The bodies of the deceased were later sent for post-mortem examination.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the local area, with villagers mourning the loss of lives. Authorities have assured that compensation as per government norms will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased.
Experts have repeatedly urged farmers and rural communities to take precautions during the monsoon season, as Odisha records a high number of lightning-related deaths every year.
