KIIT University girl student’s death: Odisha CM urges Nepali students to return to campus, assures justice

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi urged Nepali students to return to the campus of KIIT University in Bhubaneswar following unrest triggered by the suspicious death of a girl student. He assured justice, peace, and normalcy on campus, with discussions held to restore order.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday urged Nepali students to return to the campus, following the alleged inhuman way of handling the unrest at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar triggered by the suspicious death of a Nepali girl student in the varsity hostel.

CM Majhi spoke with Nepali Counsellors Sanjeeb Das Sharma and Navin Raj Adhikari, assuring them that justice will be served to the deceased KIIT student, Prakriti Lamsal. He also assured that peace and normalcy would be restored on the KIIT campus while urging Nepali students to return to campus and resume their studies.

“A discussion was held at the State Guest House with officials from Nepal, attended by Ministers Mukesh Mahaling and Suryabanshi Suraj, along with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, to ensure the restoration of normalcy at KIIT. Additionally, the Foreign Minister of Nepal spoke with Suryabanshi Suraj over the phone regarding this matter,” read a tweet on the ‘X’ handle of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

KIIT University row: Action taken by Odisha Govt so far

  1. Police responded immediately and due to timely action the accused person was nabbed at Bhubaneswar airport and was arrested by Commissionerate Police and forwarded to the judicial custody.

  2. KIIT University has appealed the Nepali students to return to the campus.

  3. A dedicated 24x7 Control Room along with a helpline number has been setup by the KIIT authorities for facilitation of smooth return of the students to campus.

  4. KIIT has apologised publicly for the incident and the same has been widely circulated.

  5. Two senior hostel officials and a senior administrative officer of KIIT’s International Relations Office have been suspended pending enquiry.

  6. Two security personnel have also been terminated by KIIT authorities.

  7. Five personnel, including two security personnel and three Directors of KIIT were arrested by the police.

  8. All psychological and other necessary supports have been provided to the family of the victim girl student.

  9. ADM, Bhubaneswar has been deployed to the KIIT Campus to restore normalcy and oversee the smooth return of the Nepali students to the campus.

10. Sub-Collector, Bhubaneswar has been deployed at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar for all necessary support to various stakeholders.

11. A high-level Committee has been constituted under the Additional Chief Secretary to Government of Odisha, Home Department along with Principal Secretary Women & Child Development, and Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Higher Education Department for inquiry into the matter.
