According to sources, Gobindpur village of Badamba block in Cuttack district is witnessing an alarming spread of jaundice. The outbreak came to light after one individual tested positive, prompting health authorities to collect samples from 33 people in the village.
Out of those tested, 14 children were found to be infected and were immediately admitted to Maniabandha health centre for treatment. Following this, a dedicated medical team was dispatched to the village to continue diagnosis, treatment, and preventive efforts.
Local health officials have assured that steps are now being taken to stop further spread of jaundice in the locality. Preventive measures and awareness drives are also underway, and residents are being cautioned about water consumption practices.
Initial findings point towards the contamination of drinking water due to leaks in pipelines under Manapur panchayat, which are maintained by the drinking water supply Department. These damaged pipes are believed to be allowing impure water to enter the supply, leading to the current health crisis.
“We did not know anything about the outbreak of jaundice. After some children of the village complained of fever, sickness, and body aches, we took them to Maniabandha hospital. Later, jaundice was detected,” a resident, Chaitanya Rout, expressed.
“Gradually, the disease spread to more than 25 persons. Following which, a medical team reached the village and collected blood samples for testing,” Chaitanya stated.
“After three children tested positive for jaundice at different hospitals in the district, we informed Health Department officials in the district. They have started preventive efforts since Saturday,” another resident, Sananda Behera, said.
