Ministers from the Panchayati Raj, Labour, and Industries departments joined the deliberations, alongside the Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja and senior departmental officials.

The objective of the meeting was to evaluate existing policies and frameworks concerning migrant labour and chart out strategies for improved welfare and regulation.

The State government has been under pressure to address the growing concerns around the safety, rights, and rehabilitation of Odisha’s large migrant workforce, especially in the wake of recent incidents highlighting their vulnerability.

The high-level taskforce meeting on migrant labourers was convened at Lok Seva Bhawan under the chairmanship of Deputy CM K.V. Singh Deo.
The key meeting took place in the Third Floor Conference Hall and saw participation from several senior government functionaries.

“Discussion was held on how to stop the migration of labourers in the State. Migration has reduced a lot during the last year compared to previous years. I would not say that it has totally been eradicated, but has been reduced to some extent,” Deputy CM Singh Deo said.

“We discussed how to further reduce the rate of migration and how to provide employment to people. A decision has been taken that a committee will directly interact with those who are migrating to other states and take their views as to why they are migrating. Thereafter, the committee will take up any further steps in this regard,” the Deputy CM stated.

“The input assistance and incentive money of Rs 800, which was disbursed to them, helped in reducing the number of migrant workers. Some of them also got employment in their home state, which reduced the number of migrants,” the Deputy CM added.
