Due to the limited number of super-specialist doctors, the medical treatment of critical patients is being severely affected in MKCG Hospital of Berhampur in Ganjam district.
Hundreds of patients depend on this government-run health facility as this is a premier hospital in southern Odisha. MKCG Hospital has several super-specialist Departments such as Neurology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Nephrology etc. Patients coming to the hospital wait for hours in long queues, some attendants of the patients alleged.

According to sources, there is an acute shortage of super-specialist doctors. The Neurology Department has only three doctors, of which one is an associate professor and two others are assistant professors. Previously, the OPD of the Department was opening three days a week, which has now been reduced to two. During the remaining days, the doctors take care of teaching in the medical college and treat indoor patients.
Similarly, the Neurosurgery Department witnesses a rush of patients in the OPD. Around 400 patients come to consult the doctors but wait from 9.00 AM up to almost 4.00 PM. In case they are advised for pathogenic tests, they need to come another day.
