A major tragedy was averted after a goods train collided with an ambulance near Kanipai while crossing a railway track. The ambulance was transporting patients from Kalyansinghpur block in Rayagada to Ananta Eye Hospital for eye surgery when the incident occurred on Monday.

As per initial reports, the accident took place when the ambulance was crossing the railway track near Kanipai, where it was hit by the oncoming goods train. Sources said that the train dragged the ambulance for nearly 100 meters, creating panic among the passengers inside.

The railway track where the mishap occurred is not a formal crossing. The place is used to cross the road and the locals have been demanding a proper crossing at the particular road as it connects with several villages. The villagers claimed to have raised their grievances before appropriate authorities, but no step has allegedly been taken so far.

However, a major tragedy was averted due to the alert train driver who applied brakes after seeing the ambulance from a distance.
