Even as the death of Gobinda Sahu, the prime accused in the sensational lady teacher Mamita Meher murder case, shrouded in mystery, the recovery of an envelope from the deceased’s pocket has further deepened the suspense.
A brown envelope was recovered from Sahu’s pocket shortly before he was taken for post-mortem. He was found hanging under mysterious circumstances at Kantabanji sub-jail on Tuesday.
It is yet to be ascertained whether the envelope contains any note or any other item. However, the recovery of the envelope holds significance in the wake of allegations of Opposition parties in Odisha that Sahu possessed vital evidence in the murder of Mamita, a teacher at Sunshine English Medium School, Mahaling in Kalahandi.
The murder had triggered massive political controversy in the State as the Opposition political parties had alleged that Sahu was a close associate of former Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra.
A relative of the deceased blamed the lapse in security at the jail for the death of Sahu. “A brown colour envelope was found in his pocket. We do not know what is in the envelope. It was handed over to the Crime Branch. The post-mortem report will establish the exact cause of his death,” said the relative.
The post-mortem process of Sahu began at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir. Two experts of FMT department of Burla medical college started the post-mortem process.
Meanwhile, the Crime Branch of Odisha Police, which has been entrusted with the case, reached Kantabanji to conduct a detailed probe into the case.
Reacting to the death of Sahu, the parents of Mamita said that God has punished the accused. “We are happy as our wish has been fulfilled. We do not know how Gobinda Sahu died, but we wished his end.”
The family also demanded a government job for Mamita’s brother.
