The 2021 self-immolation case involving Sambalpur University employee Dinabandhu Mishra has once again come under public spotlight, with the deceased’s son, Ankit Mishra, renewing demands for a high-level investigation.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Ankit appealed with folded hands for a CBI probe into the incident, alleging that despite repeated pleas in the past, justice has been denied.
“We had written to the Odisha Governor seeking a judicial inquiry, but the then Odisha government did not pay any heed. Many eminent persons across the country also demanded a judicial inquiry, but nothing happened. No one was arrested,” Ankit said.
“I demand justice, legal action against those for whom my father set himself on fire. They are roaming scot-free,” he added.
Dinabandhu Mishra had died on April 20, 2021, after setting himself ablaze in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, reportedly due to prolonged mental harassment. His suicide note had named specific individuals, accusing them of driving him to take the extreme step.
While the issue sparked outrage at the time, the family claims no concrete action was taken. Ankit has urged authorities to initiate stringent legal proceedings against those named in the note.
There has been no official response so far from the university administration or the police regarding the renewed demands.
