A serious allegation has emerged against a mathematics lecturer of Adikabi Sarala Das College at Tirtol in Jagatsinghpur district. A female student has accused the lecturer of deliberately deducting her marks in the internal examination because she did not attend his private tuition classes.

According to the student, the lecturer acted out of personal vengeance and intentionally awarded her lower marks, which has adversely affected her academic record.

The student has filed a formal complaint with the district Collector, claiming that the deduction of marks has prevented her from qualifying for various scholarship examinations.

"She (student) has been awarded 13 out of 20 in the internal examination. We checked her answer sheets in doubt and found that her marks had been deducted. She should have secured 19 marks instead of 13. According to my daughter, her marks have been deliberately deducted as she is not attending the lecturer's tuition classes," said the father of the student.

On the other hand, the mathematics lecturer has refuted the allegations made against him.

"All the students in the college are equal to us in the college and we can't show favouritism to anybody. I have never done this kind of thing to anybody. The student who has complained doesn't come to the college, and I don't even recognise her. How could I deduct her marks? I have never discussed about tuition matter with her," said the mathematics lecturer.

Responding to the situation, the college principal stated that the matter has been brought to the attention of the higher authorities in the Education Department.

"She (student) had only told me about her deduction of marks. She has never told me that she was tortured by the lecturer. I just came to know about the matter. I will call the girl and introduce her to the Internal Complaints Committee members. The matter will be investigated and actions will be taken," said Mamata Raut, Principal of Adikabi Sarala Das College.

Meanwhile, the district Sub-Collector has informed that a letter has been sent to CHSE requesting a re-evaluation of the student’s marks. He further assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the incident, and necessary action will be taken based on the findings.

"After receiving the allegation from the student about her internal examination mark, I had asked for a report about the matter from the principal. The principal has submitted a report. The final result has already been published by CHSE. According to the principal, CHSE can order for re-evaluation. We have forwarded her complaint to the Director of CHSE to re-evaluate her answer sheets. If it is revealed that marks have been deducted during the re-evaluation, action will be taken against the concerned lecturer," said Jagatsinghpur Sub-Collector Prashant Kumar Tarei.
