In a tragic incident, a farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the Tangishala village under Mahalunda panchayat of Hindol block in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district. The deceased has been identified as Muliya Samal, a resident of the same village.

According to reports, the incident occurred while the farmer was heading to his farmland early on Saturday morning. A wild elephant suddenly attacked him, resulting in his death on the spot.

The elephant herd is reportedly still roaming in the nearby forest area, causing panic among local residents. Forest officials have been alerted, and efforts are underway to drive the elephants away from human settlements.

“If someone had poached an elephant, an arrest would have been made. But a man was killed, four-five buffaloes were trampled to death, but no one has visited the village,” alleged Nityananda Nayak, a local.

This comes just two days after a similar incident in the same region, where three people were killed in elephant attacks. The repeated incidents have created a fearful and mournful atmosphere in the affected villages, with locals demanding immediate action from the forest department to prevent further casualties.

Notably, on July 31, three persons were killed in an elephant attack near Baghdharia village in the district.

Angered by the absence of forest officials at the scene, locals had blocked the road at Hindol Satamile Chhak by placing the bodies on the road. The villagers demanded immediate compensation for the victims' families and a permanent solution to the rising human-elephant conflict.
