In an unusual incident, two persons, including a woman, were arrested by Khetrajpur police in Sambalpur in connection with deceiving an individual from Madhya Pradesh of Rs 1.40 lakh by giving a fraudulent marriage offer.

The accused have been identified as Rajlaxmi Mishra from Gosala area in Burla and Mahendra Deep from Sonepur, who masqueraded as siblings under the aliases Rashmi Panda and Sanjay Panda. Both of them were residing in the Ainthapalli area for some time.

Khetrajpur  Police successfully retrieved Rs 1.21 lakh from the perpetrators, which has since been returned to the victim, Ranjit Sahu.

As per reports, the alleged scam unfolded when Sahu was enticed by a marriage promise and travelled with his family members to Sambalpur on May 20 to meet the fictitious bride.

Victim Lured with Marriage Hopes

Upon reaching Sambalpur and meeting near Samalei Ghat, the accused reportedly demanded money for wedding preparations and attire, claiming that it was necessary before the ceremony.

According to police reports, after receiving the amount from Sahu's family, the con artists vanished without a trace. 

Subsequently, victim Sahu lodged an FIR about the matter at the Khetrajpur police station. Following the development, Khetrajpur Police registered a case and arrested the accused, Subsequently, they were forwarded to court.

The situation is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in interactions involving trust and relationships, especially common in arranged marriage contexts within the country.
