According to official sources, the wild pachyderm had got stranded in Brahmani River near Dihadol Forest Section under Dhenkanal Division after a sudden surge in water levels early in the morning. The jumbo, separated from a 40-member herd, was caught in strong currents, raising concern among forest officials and locals.
The herd was moving from Parjang locality towards Hindol when the incident occurred. As they attempted to cross the river, a sudden increase in the water level and fierce current caused the tusker to lose contact with the group and get stuck midstream.
Eyewitnesses said the elephant was visibly struggling to reach the riverbank but was hindered by the strong whirlpool. Fortunately, after several hours of effort, the elephant managed to free itself and reach safer ground.
Forest authorities monitored the situation closely and confirmed that the tusker did not sustain any injuries. The herd had ventured into the area in search of food and water.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges of human-wildlife interactions in Odisha forests, particularly during monsoon season when water bodies swell unpredictably.
