The elderly couple was critically injured when a mud wall collapsed on them in Kula Brahman Sailo village under Gobindpur police limits of the district. The late-night mishap that occurred on Saturday has raised serious concerns over housing safety during the ongoing spell of seasonal rainfall.
The victims, Siba Bhoi and his wife Premalata Bhoi, had got buried under the debris. Alerted by the sudden noise, some local residents rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the couple in a severely injured condition.
The couple in critical condition was initially taken to the community health centre (CHC) at Adaspur and was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack for advanced treatment, due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Preliminary assessment suggests that the collapse occurred due to the weakening of the mud wall structure caused by days of relentless rain.
“All of a sudden, the wall collapsed late last night at around 4.00 AM, and my uncle (father’s younger brother) and aunt (uncle’s wife) got buried under the debris. After hearing a scream, we woke and rushed to the spot to help them,” a relative of the elderly couple, Sudarshan Bhoi, stated.
“We rescued the couple and admitted them to a hospital in Adaspur locality. Now they are undergoing treatment in Cuttack SCB Hospital,” the relative added.
Local authorities are expected to inspect similar structures in the locality to prevent further mishaps. No comments were received from the authorities in this regard.
