A distressing incident came to the fore on Tuesday in the Malpada locality of Bolangir district, where a young man allegedly attacked a calf and pierced its eye whilst under the influence of alcohol.

The harrowing scene unfolded as the affected animal's cries alerted nearby residents, who promptly intervened.

The accused youth, who has been identified as Biswajit Senapati, was apprehended by local residents and subsequently handed over to the police. Law enforcement officials have been questioning Senapati and initiated a detailed probe into the incident.

The injured calf was later transported to the district veterinary hospital where it is receiving medical treatment.

Confessions of the accused youth

“I did not gouge the calf’s eye but pierced. It was my mistake and wrongly I have njured the animal. I had to settle some personal scores with Jagmohan Babu (a local resident) from Betara Pada and hence attacked the calf,” accused Biswajit said to OTV.

“We saw the youth while he was attacking the calf and immediately overpowered him. Some local youths, who were annoyed with the incident, severely beat him,” a Malpada resident, Debasish Udgata expressed to our reporter.

“Later, we called the PCR (patrolling team) and handed him over to police and took the calf to hospital for treatment,” Udgata added.

Earlier in another incident, a man allegedly electrocuted a stray dog to death in the Sankarpur locality of Badambadi in Cuttack. Sources said that the dog died after coming in contact with an electrified fence constructed by the man.

The shocking incident had spread outrage in the locality, with residents demanding stringent action against the accused.
