In a dramatic turn of events, a car carrying a large consignment of ganja was allegedly set on fire by its driver after a tyre burst in Binika town’s Nuabazar area of Sonepur district on Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle, which did not have a registration number, developed a flat tyre while moving through a busy stretch of the town. As passers-by gathered around, the driver reportedly doused the car with fuel and set it ablaze before fleeing the spot.
Soon, flames engulfed the entire vehicle, reducing it to a charred shell within minutes. On being informed, the Fire Services team rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading further in the crowded market area.
Preliminary assessment suggests that the car was carrying nearly three quintals of ganja. The burning of the vehicle is believed to have been an attempt by the driver to destroy evidence of the illegal trade.
