Dreaded criminal Deepak Mandal was injured in a police encounter at Rampela forest in the Rengali area of Sambalpur district on Tuesday.

Following the encounter, a forensic team visited the site and carried out a detailed examination. Investigators collected blood samples, the accused’s firearm, and five spent bullet shells as part of the evidence.

On Tuesday evening, Sambalpur witnessed high drama when Deepak was injured in a police encounter at Rampela forest in the Rengali area. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team of Sambalpur police had laid a trap in the locality to nab the criminal.

According to official sources, Deepak attempted to evade arrest by opening fire on the police team. He reportedly fired three rounds in quick succession, forcing the police to retaliate.

In the exchange of fire, he sustained a bullet injury below his right knee. Severely injured, he was immediately rushed to Burla VIMSAR hospital, where he continues to remain under treatment in critical condition.

Police sources confirmed that Deepak Mandal was wanted in connection with a series of heinous crimes, ranging from robbery to extortion, which had spread fear across the region. His capture and neutralization mark a significant breakthrough for Sambalpur police in their ongoing efforts to curb organized crime and restore public confidence.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling hardened criminals who often resort to violence in order to evade the law.
