In a scene reminiscent of the popular film ‘3 Idiots’, a staff nurse in Kandhamal district has safely delivered triplets with the help of a doctor advising her over the phone. The ‘heroic effort’ in a remote tribal region saved both the mother and the babies.

According to sources, in an inspiring display of courage and coordination, a staff nurse in Kandhamal’s Belghar locality successfully assisted the safe delivery of three newborn boys with only the guidance of a doctor over a mobile phone. The incident, which occurred on July 6, drew widespread admiration on Wednesday.

The patient, Ranjita Majhi, a member of the Kutia tribal community, was brought to the Belghar Public Health Centre (PHC) after experiencing labour pains. Nurse Sindhulata Jani, who was on duty, first delivered one baby boy at around 10.00 AM. Soon after, she discovered that two more babies were still in the womb, making it a high-risk, complex case.

Lacking advanced medical support on-site, Sindhulata quickly contacted Dr. Dibyajyoti Kar, who was 26 Km away at Tumudibandh Community Health Centre (CHC). Recognising the urgency, the doctor chose not to refer the patient, fearing complications during ambulance transport.

Instead, Dr. Kar guided nurse Sindhulata step-by-step over the phone. Their mobile network proved to be a lifesaving blessing. After nearly two and a half hours of intense effort, Ranjita successfully delivered two more baby boys. Both the mother and the newborns survived the ordeal.

This exceptional medical coordination has drawn comparisons to a popular scene from Bollywood’s 3 Idiots, where childbirth was conducted via webcam support. In this real-life drama, Sindhulata and Dr. Kar emerged as true heroes.

The babies’ father, Kansa Majhi, a daily wage labourer, now has three more sons, in addition to one son and a daughter he already has. “I’m happy and grateful,” he said, overwhelmed with emotion. Mother Ranjita is also in good health now.

Currently, the triplets are in stable condition, though two of them weigh only 1.4 Kg and one weighs around 1.5 Kg. As a precaution, they have been shifted to the Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at Baliguda Hospital for specialised treatment.

“He (Dr. Kar) had advised me not to get nervous and strictly follow his instructions and accordingly perform the delivery procedure. Subsequently, the second and third babies were born. I had remained in contact with him over the mobile phone, and the delivery was successfully carried out,” nurse Sindhulata told OTV.
