Cyclone threat: Odisha govt cancels leave of employees

The Odisha government, anticipating a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal around October 23, has cancelled all leaves for state staff, informed SRC Deo Ranjan Singh. The IMD predicts the cyclone to impact the Odisha-West Bengal coast by October 24. Collectors may decide school holidays based on evolving conditions.

The Odisha government cancelled leaves of staff in view of a possible cyclone likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around October 23, informed Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Deo Ranjan Singh on Sunday.

Speaking to media following a review meeting, the SRC said, “Leaves of all state government staff have been cancelled. All officials have been directed to remain at their respective places and perform their duties.”

When asked about announcing holidays for school students, Singh said, “Though we have not made any decision on that so far, the Collectors have the power to take a call considering the situation.”

Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal around October 23. 

Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24 morning.

Under its influence, the wind speed along the Odisha coast may reach 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph from October 23 evening and will reach a speed of 100-120 kmph by October 24 night.
