According to sources, in a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the residents of Badamba in Cuttack district, two women from the same family—an elderly woman and her daughter-in-law—have died after allegedly consuming poison, while the elderly woman’s son remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment in a health facility.
Fallout of family feud
The two deceased have been identified as Sangeeta Senapati (daughter-in-law) and Nibasi Senapati (mother-in-law), both residents of Badabarasingh village under the Badamba block. Bhagirathi Senapati, husband of the deceased woman Sangeeta, is undergoing treatment at a health centre in Badamba in critical condition.
As per preliminary reports, a prolonged family dispute may have triggered the tragic event, though the specific reasons for the poisoning are still unknown. Personnel from Badamba Police Station have registered two separate unnatural death (U/d) cases and launched a detailed probe to ascertain the actual cause of death.
Badamba Police are yet to confirm whether the alleged poisoning was voluntary, coerced, or criminal in nature. As of now, police have not released an official statement.
The incident has sparked grief and shock in the local community, with many awaiting clarity on what led to the deaths in what appeared to be the fallout of a family feud.
“My daughter was killed yesterday by her in-laws. They took her to the Badamba hospital without informing me, when she became critical,” Sangeeta’s mother, Banita Nayak said.
“It is a case of poisoning. A post-mortem was conducted after the local police requisitioned. Health condition of the man has improved in the meantime,” the doctor treating the women, Dr. Dolagobinda Jena, stated.
