The Cuttack railway station is being transformed to resemble an airport, with enhanced services and infrastructure. For the first time in the State, the station will be directly connected to a national highway, enhancing travel convenience.
According to official sources, Sikharpur side of the station will get a third, air-conditioned entrance tomorrow, after inauguration by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

This significant infra development ushers in a new era of comfort for passengers, offering facilities traditionally associated with airport experiences, such as temperature-controlled waiting areas, plush seating, and modern sanitation provisions. Culinary choices will also expand with food tracks within the premises.
Incorporating Odia art and cultural motifs, the station boasts of bright and celebratory decor. The new third gate at Sikharpur side will seamlessly connect with the national highway, facilitating easy bus connectivity for passengers travelling to distant locations.
Four ticket counters will cater to general passengers, with an additional counter dedicated to those with physical disabilities. Modern lifts and escalators enable ease of movement, while comprehensive LED displays ensure clear and up-to-date train information.
A pharmaceutical store on site ensures traveller needs are attended to. The third entrance offers air conditioning, with seating for 500, and ample parking space for visitors.
Enhanced security measures feature CCTV surveillance; fines are enforced for breaches in cleanliness: Rs 200 for littering, Rs 300 for spitting, and Rs 400 for public urination. Smoking violations result in a fine of Rs 200, while vandalising carries a penalty of Rs 500.

The plan to connect Cuttack railway station with national highway was conceived in 2021, at a cost of around Rs 15 crore. Land acquisitions near Sikharpur made this vision a reality.
When contacted, East Coast Railway (ECoR) General Manager Parmeshwar Funkwal said, “In a city like Cuttack, we are able to achieve a direct and free access to the national highway, which is meant for passengers.”
