A joint raid by the Drugs Inspector and Special Task Force (STF) shook Bhubaneswar’s Unit-1 Market on Wednesday. Illegal tobacco products, including Gutkha and Zarda, were seized from at least five shops.
According to official sources, in a coordinated operation, the joint team carried out a major crackdown targeted on five retail shops, leading to the seizure of large quantities of Zarda and Gutkha, all of which were being sold without legal permission. The crackdown follows reports of unlicensed sales and growing concerns over youth addiction.
The enforcement action comes amid rising reports of illegal sales of banned and addictive substances, especially near public places. Officials stated that despite clear legal restrictions, unauthorised sale of tobacco products remains rampant in the Capital City.
According to regulations in place since October 2, 2008, smoking in public places is banned, and the sale of intoxicants to individuals below 18 years is strictly prohibited. However, the authorities have continued to receive intelligence about the sale of such products, prompting today’s operation.
The STF has hinted at further raids in other parts of the city to curb the illegal tobacco trade, especially where vendors are believed to target minors. Authorities have also warned of strict legal action against those found violating tobacco control laws.
“We were tipped off that some retailers are rampantly selling spurious as well as nicotine-based tobacco products (which are excessively harmful and cause cancer) in Bhubaneswar, including Unit-1 Market,” STF DSP Pradeep Rout said to OTV.
“We are verifying their (the retailers’) source of procurement, and stringent action will be taken,” the DSP further said.
