In a surprising turn of events, Udala police on Tuesday seized 180 litre of country liquor concealed in cold drink bottles from a private bus at Udala bus stand in Mayurbhanj district and arrested three persons in connection with the case.
The accused have been identified as Sanyasi Bisoi, Umakant Das from Hi-tech area in Bhubaneswar and Putu Singh from Ambikadeipur area in Udala.
According to sources, the liquor was illegally being smuggled from Khunta to Bhubaneswar in a private bus.
Acting on a tip-off, the Udala police intercepted the private bus, named Raja Babu, and seized the contraband packaged in cold drink bottles.
The two traders from Bhubaneswar had reached Khunta to collect the illicit liquor and planned to smuggle it back to Bhubaneswar on a night bus. The accused revealed that for each bag of liquor successfully transported, they were paid Rs 500 by their owner.

“I came here to collect the liquor. This is the first time I came here to smuggle the country liquor,” said accused Sanyasi Bisoi.
Umakant Das, another arrested smuggler said, “I was not aware of the illegal liquor smuggling. They brought me here. We were carrying the liquor in bags.”

“I was carrying one bag and for each bag, our owner gave us Rs 700-800. The owner, who hails from our villages, pays us to smuggle the liquor bags. I was told to deliver the bag at Hi-tech area in Bhubaneswar,” Putu Singh, the third arrested accused said.
No comments from police could be obtained over the illegal smuggling of country liquor.
