Amid mounting concern over the deteriorating health of the Fakir Mohan Autonomous College girl who attempted self-immolation in Balasore, political tensions erupted on Sunday, with the BJD and Congress clashing over institutional accountability and the government’s response to the tragedy.
The incident, which has left the girl battling for life on advanced life support at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, has now become the epicentre of political protests, party statements, and competing demands for justice.
Congress Gears Up to Gherao Collector’s Office
The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee intensified its attack on the ruling dispensation, demanding a judicial probe into the incident and strict action against individuals involved in the alleged harassment.
Balasore Congress in-charge Sanjeeb Giri announced that the party would gherao the Collector’s office on Monday, seeking immediate justice for the victim and her family.
“The Principal is the head of the institution, but his inaction led to an innocent girl fighting for her life. We demand accountability and justice. To assure this, we will gherao the Collector's office,” he said.
BJD Calls for Action
In a parallel development, the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) and Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) also staged protests outside FM College, demanding an impartial investigation and punishment for those responsible.
Senior BJD leader Byomakesh Ray joined the chorus, stating that the party stands for justice.
“Everyone is guilty of neglecting this incident. The ones who mentally and sexually harassed the girl should be dealt with the harshest punishment,” he said.
Odisha Government Takes Action
In response, BJP legislator and Balasore Sadar MLA Manas Dutta slammed the Opposition and warned them to maintain sensitivity and avoid politicising the matter while investigations are underway.
He further added that the Odisha government acted swiftly on the matter and arrested the accused teacher, Sameer Kumar Sahoo, while also suspending FM College Principal Dillip Ghosh.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, yesterday, vowed severe punishment for anyone found guilty, but said that the government will act in accordance with the findings of the ongoing probe into the matter.
Moreover, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar after returning from Delhi on Sunday. He took stock of the condition of the girl undergoing treatment in the hospital and assured stern action against those found guilty.
