Burmese python gets trapped in fishing net in Puri, rescued after intense operation

In a rare and dramatic rescue operation near the Satashankha Market area of Puri district, a large python was found trapped in a fishing net cast in the Ratnachira river. 

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when local fishermen, who had laid nets in the river the previous night, returned to collect their catch and instead found an unexpected guest — a fully grown python struggling inside the net.

What Happened Next?

According to eyewitnesses, the sight of the massive reptile caused panic among locals, many of whom initially mistook it for a water log or large fish. Upon closer inspection, it was confirmed to be a python entangled in the net, likely in search of prey or shelter in the shallow waters of the river. 

The fishermen immediately refrained from any action and informed the Snake Helpline team, a wildlife rescue group dedicated to the safe handling and relocation of reptiles.

Responding swiftly to the call, members of the Snake Helpline team arrived at the scene and carefully extracted the python from the net. The rescue was conducted with great care to avoid injuring the animal. Upon examination, it was found that the snake had not sustained any major injuries or trauma.

The rescued snake was later identified as a Burmese python. Speaking to the media, a Snake Helpline member confirmed that the python measured several feet in length and appeared to be in healthy condition

“This species is usually found in wetlands, rice fields, or near water bodies such as those in wetlands. It likely entered the area while following the scent of small animals or birds,” the rescuer said.

After ensuring the python's well-being, the team shifted it to a suitable natural habitat and released it safely into the wild, away from human settlements. The entire operation drew the attention of curious onlookers and raised awareness about the importance of coexisting with wildlife.

Officials have reminded the public not to harm or panic upon spotting wild animals and instead to immediately alert wildlife authorities or helpline services for safe intervention. The incident also highlights the increasing interactions between wildlife and human activities, especially in ecologically sensitive regions like the Puri coast.
