An anti-encroachment and eviction drive began in Bargarh City this morning as the municipal administration staff arrived with bulldozers and began razing several unauthorised structures built on government land under a heavy security blanket.

Sources reported that the encroachment removal drive was being conducted along the stretch of land from Lengu Mishra Square to Ambapali Square. To ensure law and order, BNS 163 has been enforced, and 120 police personnel are deployed on-site, with the district magistrate and authorities from the municipal administration overseeing the operation.

Targeted Structures and Purpose

As of the latest reports, the Bargarh municipal administration demolished unauthorised shops and houses built on encroached government land, originally belonging to the Works Department and intended for the possible future expansion of National Highways.

History of the Eviction Drive

It is worth mentioning that the eviction drive originally began in 2023 after the district administration served eviction notices to several shops and homeowners. However, the move was met with severe protests, following which the Orissa High Court issued a stay order on further demolitions.

Court Ruling and Resumption of the Drive

In a recent ruling, the state’s top court allowed the razing of unauthorised structures, provided the occupants were served notices in advance. Following compliance with this order, the Bargarh administration resumed the anti-encroachment drive.

Public Coordination and Current Status

Till the last reports came in, the demolition drive was largely coordinated with the public, showcasing understanding with the matter. Further, the situation was also stated to be under control, and no untoward incidents were reported.

Complaints from Residents

The anti-encroachment drive also came after repeated complaints from adjoining residents of Bargarh regarding severe traffic congestion in the area owing to the presence of illegally built structures.
