In a distressing turn during Holi celebrations, five individuals were allegedly murdered yesterday at different places across Odisha, prompting accusations from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) against the State government's law enforcement capabilities, on Sunday.

BJD legislator Arun Sahoo heavily criticised the government, stating, “Wherever there are ‘Maha Nagars’ (meaning-major cities), there have been ‘Maha Murders’ (meaning-gruesome murders,” highlighting a perceived failure on part of the Government to maintain law and order despite previous assurances of public safety during the festival.
“The Government had made lots of announcements that law and order will be maintained. However, at least five murders occurred yesterday. After this government came to power and after giving around a thousand warnings, why such murders are taking place in broad daylight? When the criminals are seeing that a feeble government is now in power, they are gaining courage to commit the crimes,” BJD’s Arun Sahoo expressed in a presser.
BJP counterattacks the Opposition party
In a counter-allegation, Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra hit back at the BJD, suggesting that issues prevalent during their (previous BJD-led government under the rule of Naveen Patnaik) leadership remain a burden today. He cited acute crunch in the police force and questioned accountability, suggesting ongoing governance shortcomings.
“We (current government) are dealing with the consequences of the BJD-led government's ineffectiveness. BJD Sarkar Ra Sukhua Bojha Ame Mundeichhu, Enu Jete Kiaphula Marile Bi Gandha Chhaduni,” the Minister remarked while speaking to mediapersons.

Surface gestures cannot conceal deeper issues, the Minister satirically stated. “Recruitment process has recently started to fill up the existing vacancies in the Police (Home) Department. Whoever is saying this must look at their (BJD’s) past days,” the Minister added.
