Bhubaneswar is set to take a decisive step in managing its urban landscape by permanently removing unauthorised street vendors from its roads. The capital city of Odisha is aiming to clear its streets to enhance cleanliness and appeal, especially as it is gearing up for major events like the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention.

Bhubaneswar's Mayor, Sulochana Das, has expressed dissatisfaction over the continued presence of illegal street vendors operating by the roadside despite repeated warnings.

During a recent visit as part of a cleanliness campaign, the Mayor questioned the persistence of these vendors, who have not obtained the necessary registrations to legalise their businesses.

In a significant move to streamline street vending, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to create dedicated vending zones across the city. These zones will be allocated exclusively to registered vendors, providing a structured environment for street trading.

Vendors have also been instructed to maintain the cleanliness of their immediate surroundings, contributing to a broader effort to make the city clean.

“We are going to make 55 roads of the Capital city encroachment-free. Along these roads, no vendors or makeshift vendors like greengrocers and fish sellers are allowed to spread their business. So that the city will bear a good look and people will also fall in habit to buy or sell at a designated place,” said Mayor Das.

Notably, the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention is scheduled to be held from January 8 to 10, 2025 in Bhubaneswar.
