The much-awaited redevelopment of Bhubaneswar Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is progressing rapidly and will be completed by November this year, Minister of State for Railways V Somanna announced on Saturday.
After inspecting the site, the Minister stated that nearly 80% of the work has been completed and the station will soon be transformed into a modern, world-class transit hub, reported The Times of India.
Rs 398-Crore Makeover Nearing Finish Line
The Bhubaneswar Railway Station, one of Odisha’s busiest terminals, is undergoing a Rs 398-crore facelift. Once complete, it will rival international airports in terms of facilities and passenger experience.
A central feature is the 108-metre-long air concourse that will link all six platforms, replacing conventional foot overbridges and offering seamless connectivity between the eastern and western sides of the station.
On the eastern side facing Cuttack Road, a three-storey structure has already been constructed.
Meanwhile, the western side near Master Canteen Square has reached the fourth floor of an eleven-storey building. Interior works are currently in progress. In total, the station will include 34 lifts, 20 escalators, an executive lounge, food plazas, baggage screening zones, and information kiosks.
Elevated Roadway For Seamless Entry And Exit
A major highlight of the redevelopment is the construction of an elevated roadway flyover similar to those seen at airports.
This elevated road will allow passengers to enter the station at the upper level and exit at the lower level, significantly improving vehicular flow and reducing congestion in the Master Canteen area.
The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has already allocated land and initiated foundational work for the elevated corridor and adjacent infrastructure.
Smart, Sustainable And Inclusive Design
Designed for a daily footfall of up to 100,000 passengers, up from the current 77,000, the station's new layout includes designated entry and exit gates, ample parking, and dedicated areas for commercial use under ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks.
The facility will also incorporate sustainability features such as green landscaping, electric vehicle charging stations, and energy-efficient systems. Special attention is being given to Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure, with barrier-free movement ensured across platforms and waiting zones.
