A dawn-to-dusk bandh observed by the Bargarh Sachetan Nagarika Mancha demanding justice for a young woman, who was allegedly abducted and later rescued in critical condition from the jungles in Kurla, has disrupted normal life in the district on Tuesday.
As part of the bandh, the citizen’s forum took to the streets and staged protests at major junctions of the district affecting vehicular movement. While shops and business establishments remained closed, emergency services were spared from the bandh.
Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded on the Bargarh-Raipur national highway, sources informed.
Accusing police of failing to apprehend the main culprits even after over eight days have passed since the crime was reported, the members of the forum are observing the bandh.
What Is The Case?
As per reports, the victim, identified as Summe Bagh went missing after she had visited to watch the world-famous Dhanu Jatra. Following this, the woman’s family filed a complaint with the police stating that the woman had gone to the jatra but never returned back. The woman’s family received a phone call from her phone by an unknown man informing that she was lying in the forest motionless.
The family could not locate her in the forest during their search, reportedly. After two days, some locals spotted her in the jungle and informed the family on Jan 14. The victim had sustained severe injuries on her head and several other parts of her body. However, as per the reports of the superintendent of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) Prof. Lalmohan Nayak, it was confirmed that the woman did not reflect sexual assault.
What Did The Police Do?
The police managed to nab three individuals, Sarjan Dandsena, Prahlad Das, and Jayakrushna Dandsena associated with the woman’s critical condition but the main culprit could not be apprehended. The police took measures to avoid evidence tampering after the main culprit managed to evade initial capture.
What Did Protesting Individuals Say?
One protesting individual said, “We are protesting against the inaction of police in the matter as despite the family filing a missing person’s complaint, the police did not do anything right away. Because of the negligence of the police, the woman had to remain in that critical condition bleeding in the forest. We want justice for the victim and immediate arrest of the main culprit.”
A member of the organization said, “Police’s negligence and inaction despite the family’s missing person’s complaint is appalling. We demand justice for Sumee Bagh and her proper medical treatment along with the arrest of the main culprit in the case.”
