Police seized 120 bottles of banned cough syrup from a person at Komna in Nuapada. The person was arrested on Saturday for his alleged involvement in the smuggling.

The Komna Police was previously tipped off about the smuggling of the banned cough syrup.  Accordingly, the cops carried out raids at different locations. As a part of this exercise, a team was checking vehicles on Bhela Krishna Road when they zeroed in on the accused on a motorcycle. Upon carrying out a thorough check, the cops stumbled upon 120 cough syrup bottles.

As the accused, who was later identified as Debendra Tandi of Renga village under Komna Police limits, couldn’t explain the source of the bottles satisfactorily, he was arrested.

The police also seized the bike used in the crime, Rs 3000 cash, and a mobile phone from Tandi’s possession.

“During the interrogation of 21 accused arrested earlier, we came to know that Debendra Tandi and Naresh Gahir of Udyan Bandh area were involved in the smuggling of cough syrup. They would procure the bottles from the Bhawanipatna and Kantabanji areas and sell them in the Komna area at a higher price. While the printed price of a bottle is between Rs 100 and Rs 192, they would sell it at Rs 600 or so,” said Nuapada SDPO, Sanjay Kumar Mandal.

The accused was produced in a court, and as his bail plea was rejected, he was remanded to judicial custody.
