The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is mulling cracking a whip against the beneficiaries of Awas yojana (affordable housing scheme) who have rented the houses allotted to them under the scheme.
As per sources, the affordable houses were distributed by the BMC. Acting on the complaints that many allottees rented out their houses, a raid by the BMC officials in the presence of police was carried out on Wednesday. And the complaints were proven true. During raids, it was found that around 250 houses had been rented out. It also came to the fore that some allottees have their own land and houses elsewhere.

Informing about the development, BMC Mayor Sulochana Das said, “We were receiving complaints about the allottees of the affordable houses renting out their houses. There were also complaints that people who have their own lands or houses elsewhere have managed to get such houses by furnishing fake documents. We allotted as per the list given by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA). Some houses were allotted to the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) beneficiaries.”
“Yesterday, BMC officials in the presence of police carried out raids on some houses and detected that about 250 houses had been rented out. Now, we are serving notices to them. If their explanations won’t be satisfactory, steps would be taken to cancel their houses,” she added.
