The introduction of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Odisha, unveiled by the Union Health Minister JP Nadda on April 11, provides a reason for the State’s elderly, particularly those aged 70 and above, to rejoice. Previously not implemented by BJD-led government, the scheme offers free healthcare to all citizens above 70 years of age through 'Vaya Vandana' health card.

What is AB ‘Vaya Vandana Card’?

Ayushman Bharat ‘Vaya Vandana Card’ is universal and there is no restriction on income, be it poor or middle class or upper class. Eligible seniors are required to apply afresh to avail themselves of these benefits. Male beneficiaries can access healthcare services valued up to Rs 5 lakh, with women entitled to Rs 5 lakh more.

“This is not an ‘insurance’ scheme, but an ‘assurance’ scheme. Every individual at or above 70 years of age is eligible to get the benefits,” Union Minister JP Nadda had said.

Know details of the health scheme

Individuals pursuing the Vaya Vandana card are directed to visit Jan Seva Kendras or use their Android phones to navigate the Prime Minister’s Jan Arogya Yojana portal. Through this portal, they can apply for the Ayushman Bharat scheme either independently or with operator assistance at common service centres (Jan Seva Kendras).

How to apply for Vaya Vandana card

The application process begins with providing Aadhaar and mobile numbers, followed by OTP verification, e-KYC compliance, and biometric verification as well, which may involve fingerprinting, eye scanning, or facial recognition. If the biometric details match, applicants receive approval for the Vaya Vandana health card.

Applicants not possessing a mobile number linked to their Aadhaar can still complete the e-KYC process. The government estimates that about 23 lakh beneficiaries in Odisha will benefit from free healthcare services with this initiative.
